Carved Walnut Jewellery Box with Brass Inlay

Solid Nuristan walnut, hand-carved with a geometric border and inlaid with brass wire. Felt-lined inside with a lift-out tray.
Nuristan walnut is dense and dark with a pronounced grain, and it is the wood Afghan carvers reach for when a piece has to last. This box is cut from solid stock, not veneered board.
The carving
The geometric border is cut by hand with a chisel and mallet — you can feel the facets where the tool changed direction. Brass wire is hammered into channels cut into the lid, then filed flush and polished.
Inside
- Felt-lined base and lid
- Removable tray with four compartments for rings and small items
- Open space beneath the tray for larger pieces
- Solid brass hinges, with a lid that stays where you set it
External size approximately 24 x 16 x 9 cm.
Care
Dust with a dry cloth. Once a year, rub in a little clear beeswax with a soft cloth and buff it back. Keep away from radiators and direct sun, which will dry the wood and open the joints.
