Badakhshan lapis lazuli, hand-cut and set in 925 sterling silver. Deep royal blue with natural pyrite flecks and fine calcite veining.
Lapis has been mined at Sar-e-Sang in Badakhshan for more than six thousand years — the same source that supplied ancient Egypt and the blue in Renaissance paintings. This stone comes from that valley.
The stone
Untreated and undyed. The deep blue is lazurite, the gold flecks are natural pyrite, and the fine white threads are calcite. Every stone is different, so the piece you receive will not match the photograph exactly.
The setting
Hand-cut cabochon of roughly 22 x 16 mm, set in a 925 sterling silver bezel with a rope border by a silversmith in Kabul. The bezel is closed at the back to protect the stone. Supplied on a 45 cm sterling silver box chain.
Care
- Wipe with a soft dry cloth only
- Keep away from perfume, hairspray, chlorine and household cleaners
- Never use an ultrasonic cleaner or a commercial silver dip
- Remove before swimming or showering — lapis is porous
